James Woodard, Dojo-Cho

James Woodard-sensei started his study of Aikido in 1996 with Kevin Jones-sensei in the Ki Aikido Center of Northern California located in Newark, California.

“In the Ki Aikido Center and Kevin Jones-sensei I found the martial art and teacher I have looked for since I was 12. I found physical and practical technique being taught in conjunction with the development of internal strength and an accessible philosophy. From day one I was learning not only how to protect myself I was also learning the mental principles which lead to balance and stability on and off the mat.”

In 1999 Woodard-sensei moved from Northern California to Colorado. In Colorado he continued to study under Jones-sensei in California while practicing at the Westminster branch of the Rocky Mountain Ki Society.

“While living in Colorado I was able to keep my connection with my teacher in California and still have regular practice on the mat thanks to the hospitality of the Ki Society dojo in Westminster.”

Woodard-sensei has had the honor of practicing in several dojo in California, Colorado and Florida. In addition to studying under Jones-sensei he has also taken instruction from senior instructors, Imaizumi-sensei, Linden-sensei and Kashiwaya-sensei.

In 2000 Woodard-sensei moved to the Jacksonville area of Florida and In September of 2003 opened Shugenkai Aikido of Florida.

“Aikido has given me tools to better my life and the lives of the people around me. It is an art with principles and practices I can apply to my everyday life to keep calm, relaxed, and focused. The way of Aikido is to curb violence by teaching conflict resolution without violence to both children and adults. Not just the violence of physical encounters which are very few and far between, but the everyday conflicts we face in life.”

James Woodard-sensei is married with two children and lives in Orange Park, Florida. None of this would be possible without the support of his family.
