About the artist
Leslie Bowman was born in Washington, DC and went to public schools in Fairfax, Virginia. She studied fine arts at Carnegie Melon University before transferring to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, where she received a BFA in Fine Arts. Later she completed a MFA in Painting from Washington University, spent a summer at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and participated in workshops at the Maine Photo Workshops.
Among the various jobs that have kept her busy, involved with art,
sometimes directly and often indirectly were three years as the
Director of Admissions at the Maine College of Art (when it was still
the Portland School of Art); photographer and writer for the Quoddy
Tides newspaper in Eastport, Maine; Instructor of photography and art
at the University of Maine,Machias and founding photographer and photo
editor at Bangor Metro magazine. Perhaps the most important job during
those many years was helping to raise two children who have both found
the arts to be a major part of their lives. Today, Leslie is living in
Washington County contributing to the Working Waterfront the newspaper
of the Island Institute in Rockland, freelancing for a number of Maine
journals and teaching at the University of Maine. Long walks in the
landscape and web surfing help bridge the various worlds that inspire
her work.
