Looking at and making images is my life’s work. The notion of creation as an activity that makes something from nothing is the story from Genesis. The big bang idea fits in here too. Our short life span makes us focus on beginnings and ends. How could the universe not mirror our life?
The critical association and editing of the vast amount of information firing our way is almost all we can do now. At least that is what drives me and my work at this time. I believe that one’s environment has a very strong influence on one’s perception. The way you take in information is as important as the information itself. That is why I have lived in Washington County. I need its constant input.
My input is not limited to wind in the leaves. The electronic stream at my fingertips and pouring from this monitor play a counterpoint. This puts me in a larger world with more information and more powerful processing. I still know that the bark on the tree outside my window is more complex and mysterious than the 0’s and 1’s that run its highest resolution image of it. Playing that edge of digital information and processing against the tangible world is what I choose to do. For me, being human is to dance that line. I always remember from the words of Buckminster Fuller, “If it wasn’t natural, it wouldn’t be here”. The responsibility this notion raises is huge.
